Call for registration for conference: From Sappho to X: Classics, Performance, Reception.

To coincide with Malthouse Theatre’s staging of the play 'Sappho...in 9 fragments' (http://www.malthousetheatre.com.au/page/SAPPHO...in_9_fragments), Monash University's School of English, Communications and Performance Studies, Malthouse Theatre, and the Australasian Classical Reception Studies Network are hosting a three day interdisciplinary conference on the relationship between performance and the Classics.

Date: 20th-22nd August, 2010
Venue: Malthouse Theatre, Sturt Street, Southbank

The conference will bring together Classical scholarship, theatre studies, translation studies and cultural studies to investigate how performance manipulates and embodies our understanding of the classical world. Keynote speakers include Professor Simon Goldhill (University of Cambridge), Professor Page Du Bois (University of California), Dr Margaret Reynolds (University of London), and from Monash, Professors Andrew Benjamin and Peter Snow.

Using the figure of Sappho as a metaphor for the many gaps we have to fill as we grapple with the otherness of the ancient world, the conference will explore how readers, translators, performers and spectators endlessly recreate the Classics in our imaginations and our embodiments.
