Aims And Scope

Performing Ethos is a new, refereed, interdisciplinary journal which considers ethical questions relating to contemporary theatre and live performance.  Global in scope, it provides a unique forum for rigorous scholarship and serious reflection on the ethical dimensions of a wide range of performance practices from the politically and aesthetically radical to the mainstream.  Of equal interest are those practices which are ethically motivated, and those in which ideological concerns are less clearly to the fore.

Call for Papers: Inaugural Issue

Completed papers of between 5000 – 7000 words are invited for the first issue, to be published in December 2008. Longer submissions may be considered in some circumstances.

The first issue seeks to identify and explore key ethical issues facing theatre and performance today. Acknowledging that ethical issues are always contextually determined, we wish to explore the range of ethical concerns and responses that arise within different cultural contexts. Contributions are welcome from a diverse range of professional and intellectual perspectives and moral and philosophical standpoints.

The journal considers papers dealing with any aspect of theatre or performance practice, criticism or analysis with a focus on ethical considerations. Examples might include, but are not limited to:

• Theoretical paradigms appropriate to ethics and theatre, and the relationship between them; 
• Ethics of representation (gender, class, ethnicity, morality, authenticity etc);
• Ethics of witnessing and spectatorship;
• Ethics in relation to inter- and intra-culturalism;
• Ethics of applied and interventionist theatre, including community theatre, theatre for development, theatre and education, theatre and health;
• Critical perspectives on ethically motivated performance;
• Performance, ethics and the law;
• Ethical practices in the creative industries (including training, employment, sustainability);

Reflections

Performing Ethos will also include a ‘Reflections’ section. Items in this section may take the form of short meditations, provocations or case studies that will set the context of ethical enquiry in relation to the study of theatre and performance. These pieces may be between 500 and 1000 words and are intended to offer topics for further debate and articles; responses will be published in the following issue.

Please send completed papers to Carole-Anne Upton ca.upton@ulster.ac.uk by 31st May 2008. Short submissions for the ‘Reflections’ section are also invited by this date. Please contact the editors with any queries, or if you wish to discuss specific proposals.

All submissions should include full references and bibliography, and articles should also include an abstract of no more than 150 words.
