Mike Mullins Archive
In the years 1976-86, Mike Mullins was investigating the use of silence, stillness, symbols and space in performance. The experiments were conducted in a series of workshops, through a number of radical intervention performances and in the creation of 13 original performance works.
Running concurrent to these primary activities of arts practice he was also engaged in a battle with the theatre establishment to create cultural change in the performing arts. One of the principle achievements in this area of concern was the founding of the Performance Space in Sydney (1980-85).
The avant-garde in the performing arts in Australia is largely un-documented. From recently published works, historians could be forgiven for thinking that there was no avant-garde in the performing arts in Australia prior to 1986.
Mike Mullins is publishing his archive. It is a slow process and it will not be completed for a number of years. However, the first stage it is now freely available for the use of students, academics and researchers.
