Hello ADSA members,

I hope your 2025s are coming to a satisfying close and that the holiday season is giving you all some time to unwind.

I am writing for the purpose of letting you know about an exciting mid-2026 ADSA event taking place the weekend before the International Federation for Theatre Research (IFTR) Annual Conference, and encouraging you to attend.

I, along with Triss Niemi, Andrew Sutherland and Ian Rafael Ramirez, are convening a pre-IFTR symposium — a gathering of the Australasian Drama, Theatre, and Performance Studies Association (ADSA)’s Gender and Sexuality Werking Group.

This event, which is called SPILL: Queer Performance’s Messy Leakages, will take place at the Victorian College of the Arts (The University of Melbourne) in Australia from Saturday 4th July until Monday 6th July 2026. The primary purpose of this event being to encourage collegiality and knowledge sharing between Oceania and the rest of the international Queer and feminist theatre and performance scholarship community.

The Call for Papers attached contains more specific information about (1) the premise of the symposium and (2) the types of presentations we are interested in programming. However, the convening team and I would like to make it clear that if you are intending to present at IFTR 2026 in Melbourne that we do not expect you to propose and prepare a second conference paper.

We encourage you to share this with your colleagues and especially with any post-graduate/higher degree research students who might be looking to maximise the productivity of their time in Melbourne if they're attending IFTR or are looking to become more involved with the Werking Group.

Feel free to reach out via email at bridget.maceochagain@sydney.edu.au if you have any further questions, and I’ll be sure to get back to you at my nearest convenience.
Looking forward to potentially seeing you in Melbourne.

All the best,
Bridget Mac Eochagain (she/her)
